Over 80 pieces and artefacts from important international museums show how a sculpture, even when incomplete or damaged, can preserve memory, beauty, and meaning that still speaks to us in the present.

From antiquity to contemporary art: The Power of the Fragment

The exhibition covers different eras and cultures, from ancient Egypt to Greece and classical Rome, from Etruria to the pre-modern civilisations of Mexico, Mali, Peru, and Cambodia.

Alongside masterpieces by Giovanni Pisano, Michelangelo, and Auguste Rodin, the itinerary brings together works by great modern and contemporary artists, including Louise Bourgeois, Huma Bhabha, and Danh Vo. Loans include pieces from institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Louvre in Paris, and the British Museum in London.

The fragment thus becomes not only what remains of something that has been lost, but an autonomous presence, capable of recounting transformations, destruction, and new possibilities. A particularly significant reflection for Florence itself, where the memory of the 1966 flood conceptually enters the narrative of the exhibition.
