Calcio Storico Fiorentino 2024: the dates have changed, but the passion remains the same

This year, the city’s pride and tradition will not be celebrated near the usual June 24 of Saint John (San Giovanni), the Patron Saint of Florence, due to municipal elections. Fear not, the spirit of the game and the energy of the teams remain unchanged, ready to excite Florentines and visitors with another spectacular match of Calcio Storico Fiorentino.

The history of Calcio Storico Fiorentino

Calcio Storico Fiorentino is more than just a sports tournament. It is a celebration of the history, culture, and passion that have characterized Florence for centuries.

Dating back to the 16th century, calcio storico combines elements of soccer, rugby, and wrestling in a single, unique competition.

The neighborhoods of the city are the stars, challenging each other with fury and determination, in tribute to their local pride and tradition.

The rules of Calcio Storico Fiorentino

Calcio Storico Fiorentino is not for the faint of heart. The rules are simple, but the game is extremely physical and competitive. Two teams, each made up of 27 players, face each other on a rectangular field covered in sand and attempt to score as many points as possible by throwing the ball into the opponent’s end of the field.

Players are allowed to use any means possible to gain possession of the ball, except hitting an opponent from behind, hitting an opponent that is already down, or any attacks involving multiple players upon a single opponent.

The teams and the atmosphere

The teams participating in the Calcio Storico Fiorentino tournament are the driving force and beating heart of the event. They represent the historic neighborhoods of Florence: Santa Croce (blue), Santa Maria Novella (red), Santo Spirito (white), and San Giovanni (green). Each is a concentrated force of united passion, pride, and spirit, ready to give their all to bring home victory.

The result is a truly unique Florentine atmosphere. The streets are filled with colors, sounds, and voices, with fans flocking to the stands of the arena set up in the stunning space of Piazza Santa Croce, just a 15-minute walk from Residence Hilda, all ready to support their teams with chants and flags. It is a truly immersive experience that will forever remain in the heart of anyone who witnesses it.
